Car Transfers from the Driver's Side

1. Double-check that your wheelchair is locked. To avoid having to transfer over the highest point of the tire, angle the back of the wheelchair out about ten degrees.

2. As much as possible, scoot to the front of the wheelchair to avoid going over the top of the tire.

3. Step into the automobile with your feet firmly planted and your knees slightly bent.

4. With your left arm, push yourself out of the driver's seat and grip the interior handle or the car's roof with your right. At the same moment, push with the right arm and pull with the left.

5. Drape a towel or a silky piece of material over the seat and let it hang slightly outside the automobile. This protects your car from being scratched by the wheelchair, as well as preventing skin shearing during the transfer.
