PEDAL EXERCISER GUIDE

Wheelchair pedal exercisers: understand the different approaches.

A useful comparison starts with the movement system, wheelchair setup and documented product status—not the word “pedal” alone.

Three approaches to seated pedaling.

User-powered pedal exercisers depend on the person producing the pedaling movement. Motor-assisted systems can drive pedal motion; designs may also support user-driven activity and adjustable resistance. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling adds coordinated electrical stimulation to produce muscle contractions.

MYOLYN describes MyoCycle as an FES cycling system. Restorative Therapies describes RT300 as integrating FES with motor assistance and resistance. These distinctions matter when comparing device specifications and clinician-guided requirements.

Look beyond the pedal unit.

Compare how the device fits the seated setup: wheelchair attachment or positioning, foot support, control placement, available clearance and access to the chair. Review the manufacturer’s current instructions rather than assuming that every pedal exerciser fits every wheelchair.

  • Identify the exact model and its documented wheelchair configuration.
  • Distinguish published features from planned product capabilities.
  • Ask about setup, support, maintenance and available documentation.
  • Discuss individual suitability and exercise settings with the care team.

Where LegMaker fits.

LegMaker is Rehabwheel’s wheelchair-integrated lower-limb motion platform under development. Its product direction includes passive motor-assisted motion, active user-driven movement and adjustable resistance. The development approach centers a pedal unit attached to the manual wheelchair.

LegMaker is not presented as a cleared FES cycling device. Its planned capabilities, regulatory status and evidence must be evaluated separately from commercially available FES systems.

Common questions.

Is motor-assisted pedaling the same as FES cycling?

No. Motor assistance describes driving pedal movement with a motor. FES describes electrical stimulation used to activate muscles. Some systems combine these approaches; confirm the exact model’s documentation.

Can I buy LegMaker today?
